NYSSRA’s newly established Scholar/Athlete Team Award Program, inspired by a similar NYSPHSAA process offered for many years to high school athletes in other sports, was created to acknowledge the academic achievements of New York State’s scholastic rowers. Implemented for the first time this spring, the program recognizes nominated varsity high school teams and clubs who meet certain criteria, including a team grade point average of 90.000% or above during the current competitive season.
“This new program will allow us to recognize the great work that kids are doing both in and out of the classroom,” said NYSSRA president Chris Chase. “It is great to have the opportunity to recognize these students who are able to balance their educational and athletic commitments, and excel at both.”
Coaches are invited to consider nominating their teams this fall for the second season of the NYSSRA Scholar/Athlete Team Award Program by the December 6, 2009 deadline. Updated Nomination Forms will be found on the NYSSRA website, nysrowing, org, in the coming months.
